The Alcove

From Milwaukee to New Orleans and ultimately to Downtown Jeffersonville, the owners of The Alcove have worked in the service industry for more than a decade and it shows. Chris Palmer and Dan Mahony, with the help of their third partner, Michael Dooley, have created and beautifully executed the latest nightlife sensation to take over the Jeffersonville area.  “We knew, from our time in Jeff, that the city was lacking a ‘Good Bones’ bar,” Palmer said.

The Alcove opened in Downtown Jeffersonville in November 2018 and has become increasingly popular. Palmer and Mahony, both relatively new to the area, are both looking forward to becoming active and supportive members of the community and the growth that comes along with it all.

With Mahony’s bartending experience and expertise, The Alcove has given him the opportunity to be creative and develop drinks that are perfect for their menu and clientele. Starting with their House Old Fashioned, one of the most popular drinks from their Winter Cocktail List, which is a simple recipe that stems from the 1880s. A delicious blend of 100 proof rye, Demerara sugar syrup and Angostura Bitters and finally garnished with a toasted orange peel.

Another popular drink this Winter has been The Alcove’s Bastard with Glasses, from here on referred to as the BWG, which is a take on the famous French 75. This light and refreshing cocktail is made with Averell Damson Plum Gin, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice and champagne.

If you’re looking to warm up this Winter, be sure to try The Alcove’s hot spiced cider, also known as Wassail. This popular drink consists of apple cider, fresh squeezed orange juice, lemon, hibiscus tea, ginger root, allspice berries, cloves and cinnamon sticks. This tasty beverage is typically served with brandy but can also be partnered with bourbon! They even offer a non-alcoholic version if you’re just looking for a delicious way to warm up on these cold evenings. Their Wassail is only being offered until the end of February, so be sure to stop in and have a mug!

On top of delicious Winter cocktails, The Alcove is always offering weekly specials which can be found on a board at the end of their bar. Their weekly specials will differ based on the kind of week at hand.

With Spring on the horizon, Palmer and Mahony already have a Spring cocktail list in mind – it will come out in March. They even have plans for beverages that will go hand-in-hand with Derby Season! Not only are they planning drinks, but events as well. Be sure to keep an eye out on their Facebook page for complete details.

Upon entering The Alcove, you are sure to notice every unique aspect that Palmer and Mahony have assembled to give the bar a sense of home and even history. From the back bar that was crafted from the piano that Palmer’s mother learned to play on, to the bar itself that came from an old horse barn in Shelbyville, KY. You are sure to see all of the efforts that Palmer and Mahony have put into making their spot such a wonderful fit for the Downtown Jeffersonville community and their customers. Whether you stop by every night after a long day at work or if you are only in town for a couple of days, you are bound to see not only a variety of history but people as well – and everyone is sure to feel right at home.

“Each time we open, it’s the spin of a roulette wheel – but no matter where it lands, we always ensure that everyone feels welcome and at home,” Palmer said.

Once you make your way through the bar, be sure to venture outside to see the incredible job they have done on their back patio! Although they opened it up right before the weather got cold, it is still worth the look. It will definitely be the hangout spot of this summer!

It’s plain to see that The Alcove is here to stay and the owners want to give their customers an experience that will stick with them and keep them coming back for more.

“I want them to feel like they found the bar that values them for their conversation and their uniqueness, I know it’s platitudinal but we want people to see us like Cheers,” Palmer said.

Whether it’s today, tomorrow or this weekend, you definitely need to make your way into The Alcove sometime soon! You can find them at 246 Spring Street in Downtown Jeffersonville. They are open from 5 p.m. until 3 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Sundays. Be sure to check them out on Facebook and Instagram as well.
