In the heart of New Washington, Indiana stands one of the town’s most iconic landmarks. This building began as a masonic lodge, the bricks that make up the building were actually made on-site where the building is now standing. After the masonic lodge, it became a school and then a movie theater. Then Marvin and Beverly Maxwell, the owners of Mom’s Music, turned the building into a dinner and a show spot. Finally, the Wiggam and Hostettler families took it over and rejuvenated the building since it was falling apart. They expanded the building, adding a full-service kitchen and bar. In April 2016, this landmark became a restaurant called The 1894 Lodge.
“It’s always been some kind of economic center for the town to thrive on. A lot of our customers are very local. But the coolest part is that all of our employees are local,” said Logan Hostettler, general manager of The 1894 Lodge.
The employees and a lot of the regular customers, according to Hostettler, have known this building to be there for their entire lives – they want to see the building do well within their community. The restaurant, along with the previous businesses, have brought a sense of togetherness to the town.
“It’s been really great to see how my employees have interacted with our customers and made them feel that this place really is awesome,” Hostettler said.
On top of bringing the community together under the same roof, The 1894 Lodge also uses a lot of local farms and meat processing plants for their produce and meats. They get their produce and meats from local places such as Berry’s Best, Pate’s Pantry and more. “We also like to grow our own produce. We grow as much as we can and if we run out, we have our go-to people that we can always rely on,” Hostettler said.
Being their own entity in the restaurant industry, they can do just about anything they want to when it comes to making the food. Everything that is made and served at The 1894 Lodge is made in-house and from scratch. Their food ranges from Italian-style food to sushi to barbeque and then some! Hostettler describes their menu as “classic dishes with a modern twist”. Basically, whatever is in-season and trending can be found on the menu at The 1894 Lodge.
Customers will come for the steaks, seafood and for their different specials. There are three different cuts of meat at The 1894 Lodge, and the steaks are cut, marbled and cooked to the customers’ definition of perfect. The cod fish is served during lunch and dinner. You can get a code fish sandwich for lunch and for dinner, a cod fish platter. The specials at The 1894 Lodge are never the same twice. They listen to what the customers are feeling in order to get a vibe for what kind of special that they will be serving that week. It can be a sushi roll, seared duck and just about anything you can think of. For lunch, customers can also order a “Meat and Two,” which is a choice of two meats and three sides. These are rotated weekly.
The 1894 Lodge is planning on several events for the future, including a Bean Soup Cook-Off that they will be hosting on March 3, 2018! In the summer, they are looking to have live music!
